Džiaukštas Silvestras

Silvestras Džiaukštas was born on January 3, 1928 in the Mikalavas farmstead, Švenčionys district. In 1954, he graduated from the Art Institute, majoring in painting. He has been participating in exhibitions since 1957. From 1962 to 1972, he taught painting and composition at the Art Institute. His works were exhibited at Lithuanian and foreign exhibitions. His first personal exhibition took place in 1978 at the Lithuanian Art Museum.

The development of S. Džiaukštas’s work is not leaps, but a persistent and consistent movement forward, penetrating ever deeper into the complex processes taking place in a person and his environment, embodying the thought or idea of concern more and more vividly and persuasively. Already in the artist’s first works, a tendency towards a generalized solution of the theme is evident. Sincere intimate experience in his canvases is combined with a broad philosophical approach to the world. The painter is moved by the problems of the great epoch and the delicate first sprout, the events that determine the fate of people and the fragile whiteness of the spring garden. Whatever theme the artist chooses, the center of his attention is always a person, his inner life. Having chosen the difficult genre of thematic – figurative painting, the artist is looking for a condensed, profound image of reality. The sharpness of feeling, the ability to maintain strong emotional tension and at the same time constant demands on himself are generally characteristic of S. Džiaukštas’ artistic individuality. His works cannot be divided into separate “beautiful” details – they always work as a whole ensemble.
