Gasiūnas Jonas
In 1959 he returned to Lithuania. In 1984 he graduated from the Lithuanian Institute of Arts. Since 1992 he has been a lecturer at the Lithuanian Institute of Arts (since 1990 Vilnius Academy of Arts), since 1998 he has been an associate professor. In 1990 he founded the group “Angis”. In the figurative painting of the early 1990s, the influence of new savages and poor art is noticeable, critical allusions to myths are characteristic, and there are many archetypal images and images related to individual symbolism (“And the Shining Spear Pierces the Dragon” 1990, “Golden Hits Above the Horizon” 1995). Since the mid-1990s, painted surfaces have been supplemented with the fumage technique (drawing and toning with a candle flame), and there are graffiti features. In his paintings, he combines eclectic contradictory images, seemingly borrowing them from the media, recreating images of mass culture, challenging their meaningful stereotypes, and alluding to historical events (“Without you, I don’t need the gates of heaven…” 2001, “Holy Maiden of the Gates of Dawn”, “Discovery Channel”, both 2002, “The Grand Duchy” 2004). He created objects (“Accordion” 1993, “I Wasn’t, I’m Not, But I’m Waiting for You” 1995, “The Whistle” 2000), installations (“Ashes Garden” 1993, “Tree Clock”, “Work Liberates I”, both 1995), and video art works (“Journey to the Sea”, “Two Dreams”, both 2003). His work reflects the change of historical and personal time, the processes of memory destruction and recovery, and is rich in motifs of decaying, decaying anthropomorphic objects and forms that repeat their own forms. Since 1986, he has participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad.
