Savickas Augustinas

Born in Copenhagen, where his father, diplomat Jurgis Savickis, resided. His mother was a dentist Ida Trakiner, who came from a wealthy Jewish family in St. Petersburg; her father owned a glass factory.

In 1923-1927, he lived in Helsinki (Finland). After his parents divorced (his father remarried his secretary), he returned to Lithuania with his mother. In 1927-1939, he lived and studied in Kaunas. In 1930-1937, he visited his father in Stockholm (Sweden) during the summer holidays, in 1939 he graduated from Kaunas 3rd Gymnasium and entered Kaunas Art School.

He studied at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Geneva (Switzerland), in 1939-1940, he lived with his mother in France and Belgium. In 1940-1941, In Kaunas, he worked in the Polish evacuation commission, in the editorial office of “Karių tiesa” (later “Raudonarmiečius”), studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In 1941, he retreated to the depths of the USSR.

In 1941-1944, he worked on a collective farm, in the Mačiščė stone quarries (near Novosibirsk), as an artist of the LSSR art ensembles, and studied painting at the Moscow School of Art of the 1905 Revolution. In 1942-1943 and 1944-1945, he was a soldier of the 50th Lithuanian Division of the Red Army.

In 1945-1949, he studied painting at the Vilnius Institute of Arts (under Justinas Vienožinskis, Vytautas Mackevičius). In 1949-1951, he worked in the Board of Arts Affairs under the LSSR Ministry of Culture. In 1951-1972, Lecturer at the Institute of Arts of the Lithuanian SSR, 1965. Associate Professor. In 1963. Awarded the degree of Candidate of Art Studies.

1973-1979. Research fellow at the Institute of History of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Arts. In 1985-1993. Taught at the Institute of Arts of the Lithuanian SSR, Professor of the Department of Painting. In 1988. Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1993. Awarded the degree of Doctor of Art Studies. Since 1951. Member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union.

Buried in Kairėnai Cemetery.
