
Stauskaitė Jūratė
Jūratė Stauskaitė (born March 7, 1947 in Kaunas) – Lithuanian graphic artist. She grew up in Šančiai, in 1955-1965 she studied at Kaunas 7th secondary school. In 1965-1971 she studied at the LSSR Art Institute, obtaining a degree in graphic art.
1970-1973. Chief methodologist of art education at the Republican Trade Union Art Self-Activity House. 1973-1975. Chief artist at the Kaunas Puppet Theatre. 1977-1983. Creator and host of the TV show “My World”. In 1991 she established a private educational institution – Vilnius Children and Youth Art School. In 2003, she was the founder and director of the Public Institution “Vilnius Children and Youth Art Gallery”. In 2011. Candidate of the Artūras Zuokas and Vilnius Coalition for the Vilnius City Municipality Council.
Married. Husband is writer Tomas Sakalauskas. Her daughter and her first husband, artist Rimas Bičiūnas, is actress Monika Bičiūnaitė. The works are dominated by the theme of women-birds: creatures with a woman’s body, a bird’s head and wings are depicted. The figures are free, captured in motion. The works are very expressionistic, which is not very typical of graphic artists. Line and spot motifs predominate, and the works are rich in symbols.
Since 1971. has participated in exhibitions. Has held over 20 personal exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. Her works have been acquired by well-known museums in Lithuania and around the world (Lithuanian Art Museum (Vilnius), Čiurlionis Museum (Kaunas), Museum of Modern Art Ludwiks Museum (Cologne, Germany), National Gallery in Prague (Czech Republic), Museum of Modern Art in New Orleans (USA), New York Public Library (USA), Museum of Modern Art in New York (USA)).
Writes essays, art criticism articles, collaborates in radio and television programs. Since 1974. Member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union.
