
Tarabildienė Domicelė
Domicėlė Tarabildaitė-Tarabildienė (May 9, 1912 in Andrioniškis, Vilkmerge County – September 8, 1985 in Vilnius) – Lithuanian artist, graphic artist, book illustrator, sculptor, photographer. She grew up in a family of nine children. In 1924-1928 she studied at the Raguva Progymnasium, in 1928-1929 at the Panevėžys Girls’ Gymnasium. Since childhood, encouraged by her father, she loved to draw, sculpt from clay, and was distinguished by her artistic talents. In 1929-1935 she studied at the Kaunas Art School, in the sculpture studio with Juozas Zikaras and Kajetonas Sklėrias, and graduated with a recommendation to continue her studies abroad.
Since 1929 she illustrated books for Lithuanian, Moscow, Kiev, Riga, and Tallinn publishing houses. In 1932, she participated in the “Lithuanian Aviation Club” poster competition. In 1933, together with her husband Petras Tarabilda, she participated in the Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas postage stamp competition and won first places. Since 1935, she has participated in art exhibitions with graphic, painting and sculpture works. In 1937, she received a gold medal for book illustrations at the World Exhibition in Paris together with her husband. In 1937-1939, she studied in Paris, at the State Higher School of Decorative Arts.
In 1940-1941, she printed her drawings in periodicals: “Šluota”, “Genys”, “Tarybų Lietuvoļu”. In 1941-1945, she lived and worked in Ukmergė, and since 1967 – in Vilnius.
Husband – artist Petras Tarabilda, sons – artists Arūnas Tarabilda, Ramonas Tarabilda, Kazys Rimtas Tarabilda, daughter – architect Giedrė Domicelė Tarabildaitė-Kontvainienė. Buried in Antakalnis cemetery. Created sculptures and sculptural compositions, illustrated and designed about 200 books. Photographed herself and later used her photographs to embody different roles.
Personal exhibitions held: 1950 in Kaunas, 1951 in Šiauliai, Palanga, Klaipėda, 1952 in Vilnius, 1954 in Moscow, 1961 in Kaunas, Jonava, Kapsukas. In August 2007, a photography exhibition was held at the Wrocław Photography Center “Domek Romanski”.
