Velaniškytė Eglė

Eglė Velaniškytė, who belongs to the so-called “generation of the break” and who came to artistic life together with Šarūnas Saukas, Vygantas Paukštes, Ramūnas Čeponis, Audronas Petrašiūnaitė, represents “real” Lithuanian painting. This painting is characterized by dark, gloomy colors, “heavy” figures of characters closely connected to the earth, and decisive gestures of the hand holding the brush. The most important thing in the works is the sense of color and tone, light and dark, strokes that form the figures of the characters. Characters who are very close to the author. On the one hand, close because they are directly surrounded by the artist – relatives, friends, on the other hand – these are biblical characters who are important to the author. Having found seriousness and the certainty of life in the village of Salakas, and having currently moved to Kaunas, she has turned her paintings into poetic diaries. They contain the artist’s discoveries and losses, everyday thoughts, and a unique peasant poetics. E. Velaniškytė lives in everyday life, transferring it to her canvases and at the same time transforming, ennobling, and enriching it. According to art critic V. Mažrimienė, “You will recognize E. Velaniškytė’s works immediately. The multi-figure compositions, marked by unconventional colors, speak through each other about a world enriched with signs of individuality, and the ideals of existence that have not been devalued.”
