A. Vozbinas is an intellectual artist deeply absorbed in the multicultural spirit of pre-war Vilnius. In his works, the old rustic Vilnius that emerged from childhood visions is constantly reborn. This now rapidly disappearing poetics of the old city shaped the artist’s worldview and encouraged him to become interested in the cultural history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A. Vozbinas is a representative of expressionist painting. However, not only expression, the power of the stroke, the emotionality of color, the spontaneous play of energetic lines are important to him, but also the structural principles of painting: composition, harmonious or conflicting relationships between the painted spaces, lines, and color spots.
Around 1994-1995, a new stage in A. Vozbinas’s painting evolution began, when elements of abstraction and poetic surrealism became the most important: “Journey There and Back” (1994), “Theme with an Interval” (1994), “Sand Castles” (1994), “Grazing in the Meadow” (1995). There is no plot in these works, only emotional relationships of colors and lines, symbols and metaphors emerging from the depths of the subconscious. Since 1997 The emotionality of the colors fades, the decorativeness strengthens, intermediate, dusty, yellowish, muted color zones appear: “Exposed” (1997), “Animalistically Urban” (2000), “Object” (2000), “The Great Dream of an Airman” (2003), “A House Where It’s Good to Live” (2004). These paintings no longer excite the perceiver, but rather calm them, forming a meditative, sometimes grotesque relationship with the world.
